“No danger to Himalayan Glaciers”

Brainstorming meeting on Climate Change at BGSBU
RAJOURI, FEB 21:The brainstorming meeting on “Climate Change” and its multiple effects held at the Centre for Biodiversity Studies of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri today has come out with the starting conclusion that the predictions made about the disappearance of Himalayan glaciers by 2035 are hollow without any scientific basis. This has come as great relief at a time when it was feared that the dooms day is not too far.
The scientists belonging to State Universities, Forest Department and Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIM), Jammu have warned that what is true of the glaciers of Alps does not hold true for Himalayan glaciers for the simple reason that the two mountain ranges vary significantly in height. As the Himalayan glaciers are located at much higher heights they are not affected as severely by the anthropogenic activities as the glaciers of Alps are. This was revealed by Professor M.N Koul who is only practicing glaciologist in India. His data concern Durung- Drang, Kangris (Zanskar Valley), Siachen (Nubra Valley), Machoi and Harmukh (Sind Valley) glaciers spread over Ladhak in J&K and Nardhu (Sutluj basin) glacier in H.P indicate that the large glaciers in Ladhakh are showing an advance whereas other glaciers are showing retreat. The brain storming meeting was inaugurated by Professor R.N.K Bamzai, Vice Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. In his illuminating address Professor Bamzai drew the attention of the audience to the human onslaught mounted on the planet which has endangered all Life support system and is now threatening our survival as well. He exhorted the student community to rise and reduce, if not halt, the emission of Carbon dioxide which underlies most of the changers that we are noticing in climate. Among others who attended the Brain Storming session were G.M Bhat (JU), Sushma Koul and M.K Koul (IIIM), Suresh Chugh and Rajeshwar Singh Jasrotia of the State Forest Department, M.R Chowdhary, Registrar of BGSBU, facility, research scholars and students of the Centre for Biodiversity Studies also participated. Vice Chancellor of the University, Masud A Chaudhary could not participate on account of the recent demise in the family.
